All the days of the afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.
Proverbs 15:15 NKJV
Do you ever feel like Eeyore? When someone asks you how’s it going your responses sound like his? Horrible, Terrible, I’m not good… I caught myself doing that lately. You see, I got into the habit of thinking of all that is going on in our world and how very evil it is and I became “afflicted” by the evil going on around me. Scroll thru your phone and all you see is division, disillusionment, illness, pain, suffering… turn on the news, talk to your friends, or walk around your neighborhood and you will see the affliction is there and it is real. I have found the more you focus on it the bigger it gets! It’s not good for your heart to focus on the negative!
That is why it is so important to shift our gaze to the heavens. To wake up grateful for the good gifts in our life as they come from God. To know God is in control of everything we see. His presence fills the earth. There is nowhere we can go apart from his presence. We might be tempted to think God has taken his hands off or his blessings away from us but that is simply not true for you personally. God will never let go of you… he holds you by his righteous right hand… your name is engraved on the palm of his hand, the Holy Spirit resides within you…I could go on! We must remind ourselves daily of who we are in Christ, and of the character of God or our heart and mind will become afflicted by the evil around us and we will see EVERYTHING as evil and it’s not.
The Proverb says “all the days of the afflicted are evil, but he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.” This is about perspective! The NASB says it like this: All the days of the afflicted are bad, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast. How we see things is critical. Is God still present in the evil that surrounds us? Yes! Is He Lord over it? Yes! If He is present in the world then doesn’t that mean there is goodness? YES! Let HIS presence be what we focus our heart on… His presence brings comfort and joy. So before you reach for your phone and start scrolling, before your feet touch the floor in the morning, think Jesus first. Jesus first in all things… over all things, thru all things. Set your mind on HIM. He has me! I’m ok! He’s gonna get me thru this! He loves me! There are Jesus moments for me today! And then look for HIM! This will encourage and “cheer” our heart. He will help us get thru this day not just surviving but thriving! Start your day with him… a “good morning Jesus be with me today”. And then find time to dive into his Word. You NEED it. You must have a daily dose of it! It is the protection we need for our minds and the comfort we need for our souls. It will help us trash the lies that keep us stuck in a negative spin cycle! Be encouraged today friend!
